Do It Yourself: How To Make A Zoetrope

Joshua Spodek, as an astrophysics graduate student, conceived of and led the development of a class of linear zoetropes that saw the first commercial success of a zoetrope in over a century. A display of his design debuted in September 2001 in a tunnel of the Atlanta subway system and showed an advertisement to riders moving past. That display is internally lit and nearly 300 meters long. Its motion-picture was about twenty seconds long. Simple Animation Devices

There are a number of options for making zoetropes. I've seen examples made from PVC pipe, or the cardboard tubes used to pour concrete into to make posts. These are usually mounted on some sort of Lazy Susan. The simplest version I found was at www.bukisa.com/videos/59559_how-to-create-a-zoetrope. It requires a plastic coffee can lid, some black construction paper, some white paper, a pencil, a box knife, scissors, and glue. Building the Zoetrope kit

Using a ruler, measure and mark where the slits will be. Slits will be placed in the top half of the cardboard; zoetrope strip should be able to sit below slits without obscuring them. Each vertical slit should be about 2" long, and about 1/8" wide. Slits should be spaced 1 and 1/2" apart. (Note: These placements and measurements are forgiving -- they do not have to be exact.) It's all a bit random and cheesey at the moment but I think it has potential, especially if I layer up a few more grids behind it and sort out the colours, maybe simplify the movements quite a bit. This next one is using multiple layers, and again will be printed out to form a cylinder. I was trying to keep this one simple, but I think I'll test out the grid one first cos it's a bit more interesting and less fiddly to put together... Now you will need to make one triangular shaped notch on the opposite edge of the paper directly across from each slit. The notches should be approximately ü inch high at the point. It's a good idea to draw the notches with a pencil and a ruler to make sure they are all the correct size and shape. After completing the notches, you need to join the two ends of the paper strip to form a ring. Make sure the paper flaps you folded are inside the ring, and secure the two ends with clear tape. retchy.com - 3D Zoetrope

Itās hard to talk film with Walter Murch and not discuss trends, philosophy and technology. Heās been closely associated with a number of digital advances, so I wondered if he saw a competitor coming to challenge either Avid Media Composer or Apple Final Cut Pro for film editing. āItās hard to see into the future more than about three years,ā he answered. āAvid is an excellent system and studios and rental operations have capital investment in equipment, so for the foreseeable future, I think Avid and Final Cut will continue to be the two primary editing tools. Four years from now, who knows? I see more possibility for sooner changes in the area of sound editing and mixing. Iāve done some promising work with Appleās Soundtrack Pro. The Nuendo-Euphonix combination is also very interesting; but, for Tetro it seemed best to stay compatible with what the sound team was familiar using. Also, [fellow re-recording mixer] Pete Horner and I mixed on the ICON and thatās designed to work with Pro Tools.ā

Next youāre wonderingā but 7 isnāt divisible by 3! Isnāt this contrapion going to be off-balance? Noā not as long as you measure your dental floss just right. Thereās actually a beauty to it being asymmetrical. Youāll have one huge gap (when itās hanging) which is easy access to exchange your zoetrope animations! So go ahead and punch a hole in one viewing slit; skip a slit, poke a hole through the next one; skip another slit and poke through the next slit. Be sure to poke the holes through the top so they donāt interrupt your animation viewing space! Youāll be left with two empty viewing slits. These will hopefully lead to some sort of instllation in the near future, and l should have some footage of it in action soon. 23/07/10 - Cloud Test I was just looking through some old files and came across this failed attempt at a floating zoetrope. It's pretty close to working though, so I think my next test will be to use slightly heavier objects like beads or something to weigh the 'frames' down properly, and I'll need to adjust the lengths of the threads so that they come out to the correct circumference once it's spinning... I'll hopefully have something to show relatively soon. Technology Interactions

So that was it really, I just went ahead and stuck the pieces on with my trusty glue gun. I'm really happy with how this one turned out and I'm glad I kept pushing myself to keep it really precise and tidy and slick, although not perfect, obviously. My new record player has three speeds and allows me to fine tune the rpm with a slider, so I was able to change the direction the animation drifts in and mix it up a bit as I was filming which makes it a bit more interesting to look at I think. But like I say, I'm going to do some more filming with this and have a bit of a play with projection and masking off or highlighting certain areas of the zoetrope... 12/03/11 - Battles - IPT2 - 3D Zoetrope Mapping My latest 3D Zoetrope experiment, combining the sine wave zoetrope I did a few weeks ago with some projection mapping, and IPT2 by Battles - here's what happened... Did the fact that this was a largely black-and-white film impact Murchās editing style? āNot as much as I would have thought,ā Murch replied. āThe footage was already desaturated before I started cutting, so I was always looking at black-and-white material. However, a few times when Iād match-frame a shot, the color version of the source media would pop up and then that was quite a shock! But the collision between color and black-and-white ultimately provoked the decision to frame the color material with black borders and in a different āsquarerā aspect ratio ā 1.77 vs. 2.35.ā Zoetrope + Bicycle Wheel = Cyclotrope | www.electronic-photo.com

Filming this frame by frame lead me down a slightly different path for a while and it got me thinking about how I might incorporate the record player technique into a film, and how I might come up with different applications for the spinning, rotating movement. This explosion test was also done using the record player and is also stop motion, but I had an idea of how this might also be developed later using the 3d zoetrope. I made some paper mache domes and pricked lots of little pinholes in them, painted them black shone a light from inside and animated them rotating on the turntable, just to see what I could do with them in After Effects really...

2. Slots must be evenly spaced around the cylinder, no more than one-half its height, and no more than 3/16ths of an inch wide (the narrower the slots, the more in-focus the image will appear). Measure the cylinder's outside circumference and divide it by 12. Subtract the width of the slots from that number and you will have the distance between each slot. Cut 12 equidistant vertical slots around the top edge of the PVC or sono tube. You can start by drilling holes at either end of the slot and then use a jigsaw to cut out the piece in between. If you're using an ice-cream bucket, cut the slots about midway up the side using a matte knife. Zoetrope // STACK independent magazine subscription and delivery

22/06/09 - 3D Zoetrope This project sprang from this one little video I caught on youtube about 6 months ago. It's essentially a 3d zoetrope where the illusion of movement is achieved with the shutter speed of the video camera instead of a strobe light or the slits of a traditional zoetrope. The minute I saw these little guys passing the parcel I knew I had to try this out for myself. ..
